Traditions:
Respect is due to older persons from younger person, and to higher-status persons from lower-status individuals. This includes using titles of respect before people's names and using the formal "you" (" usted "). Women must show respect to men, should not raise their voices to them, and must serve them food on demand. Greetings are necessary upon entering a store or, in small towns and communities, passing someone on the street. Failure to greet a person is considered offensive.
Celebrations:
January 16 Peace Accords Day - Celebrates the peace accords signing between the government and the guerrilla in 1992 that finished the 12-year civil war. Mostly political events.
March/April Holy Week/Easter - Celebrated with Carnival-like events in different cities by the large Catholic population.
May 1 Labor Day International Labour Day
May 3 The Day of the Cross - A celebration with pre-colonial origins that is linked to the advent of the rainy season. People decorate a cross in their yards with fruit and garlands then go house to house to kneel in front of the altar and make the sign of the cross.
May 10 Mothers' Day
August 1–7 August Festivals - Week-long festival in celebration of El Salvador del Mundo, patron saint of El Salvador.
September 15 Independence Day - Celebrates independence from Spain, achieved in 1821.
October 12 Day of the race - Celebration in dedication to the Indians (Amerindians).
November 2 Day of the Dead - A day on which most people visit the tombs of deceased loved ones. (November 1 may be commemorated as well.)
November 21 Queen of the Peace Day - Day of the Queen of Peace, the patron saint. Also celebrated, the San Miguel Carnival, (carnaval de San Miguel) a known feast in El Salvador, celebrated in San Miguel City, similar to Mardi Gras of New Orleans,where you can enjoy about 45 music bands on the street.
December 12 Festival Day of the Virgin Guadalupe
December 24 Christmas Day - In many communities, December 24 (Christmas Eve) is the major day of celebration, often to the point that it is considered the actual day of Navidad — with December 25 serving as a day of rest.
Alcohol:
The most common alcoholic beverage is beer (cerveza); in El Salvador the most popular brand name is Pilsener. Suprema is considered the premier local brew. Both and other popular beers are made by Industrias La Constancia.
Legal drinking age: 18.
Sports and Hobbies:
In El Salvador they practice numerous sports, the most popular is football. The Estadio Cuscatlán in the capital San Salvador is the largest stadium in Central America with a capacity of just over 45,000. The stadium is the home ground of the El Salvador national football team as well as club teams Alianza FC and San Salvador F.C..
Other notable football stadiums in El Salvador include Estadio Jorge Calero Suarez, Estadio Jorge "Mágico" González Estadio Jose Gregorio Martinez, Estadio Luis Amílcar Moreno, Estadio Oscar Quiteño, Estadio Simeón Magaña and the Sergio Torres Stadium.
Athletics, Basketball, Handball, Swimming and Volleyball are also popular.
